BODY ORGANS

An organ is a part of your body that performs a specific function: like your brain, lungs, or skin. They are made up of a collection of different tissues e.g. muscle tissue, nervous tissue. A tissue is made up of similar cells that carry out a specific function. Every individual is made up of billions of cells.

HEART

 

The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.

LUNGS

 

The lungs form part of the respiratory system and are a network of branching passageways ending in the alveoli (air sacs). They are responsible for supplying our bodies with oxygen and getting rid of the waste product carbon dioxide.

BRAIN

 

The brain forms the main organ of the nervous system. It is the main control centre for the body, which recieves and processes information.

STOMACH

 

The stomach forms part of the digestive system and is a muscular J-shaped bag. It produces acidic gastric enzymes to digest food.

INTESTINES

 

The intestines from part of the digestive system and consist of the small and large intestines. They are muscular tubes that lead from the stomach, and they are responsible for the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients and water.

LIVER

 

The liver is the largest internal organ of the human body, and forms oart of the digestive system. It has many functions including the production of bile.

PANCREAS

 

The pancreas is a leaf shaped organ and is part of the digestive and endocrine systems. Its function in the digestive system is to produce digestive enzymes, needed to continue the break down of food in the small intestine and its function in the endocrine system is to produce hormones sucha s insulin to control the level of sugar in the blood.

KIDNEYS

 

The kidneys form part of the renal system and are responsible for the filtering of blood. They remove waste and excess water, forming urine.

BLADDER

 

The bladder forms part of the renal system, and is responsible for the storage of urine.

UTERUS & OVARIES

 

The uterus and ovaries form part of the female reproductive system. The ovaries are responsible for the storage and release of ova (eggs), and also form part of the endocrine system where they are responsible for the production of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The uterus (womb) is responsible for the development and growth of the foetus.

TESTES

 

The testes form part of the male reproduction system and endocrine system. They are responsible for the production, storage and release of sperm, and they produce the male hoemone testosterone.

EYE

 

The eyes from part of the nervous system (senses), and are responsible for our sight.

EAR

 

The ears from part of the nervous system (senses), and are responsible for our hearing.

SKIN

 

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and has several major functions including temperature regulation and protection.
