The Kidneys

 

Structure

  • Located near the middle of the back, one on either side of the spine

  • Bean-shaped, about the size of a fist.

  • Consist of an outer cortex, inner medulla and pelvis


 

Function

  • Filter blood as passes through them removing any waste products to produce urine

  • Release hormones that control blood pressure

  • Maintain fluid balance in the body
